"Industrial Visual Notation: 45G1 Stacks" - Framed Library Edition
FRAMED LIBRARY EDITION
45G1 Stacks and other works were displayed at the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh’s Main Library Gallery, in the Carnegie Institute building, the cultural legacy of American steel manufacturing. This is that very work - it has a unique and specific history, and comes with a handsome edition certificate unique to the three works that were displayed in that 2018 show.
ABOUT INDUSTRIAL VISUAL NOTATION
Observing, documenting, and synthesizing the structures of heavy industry, especially Intermodal Containers (or shipping containers) is an ongoing constellation of passion projects.
Whether it’s writing about real-world stories and systems, drawing from life, incorporating them into fictional settings and fantastical stories, or modeling them as papercraft objects, they are a frequent feature in my work.
The draw to the subject is part wonder, part reclamation. The scale of logistics needed in modern production, material-use, and transport is endlessly fascinating. Container ships, railroad well cars, and the rubber tire gantries used to warehouse containers in-yard are modern behemoths, the man-made whales of the consumer landscape.
Making industrial scale systems and objects into paper art objects and playthings gives us a sense of playfulness and control when confronting a system that is so far beyond our human scale. Portraying them in a charming, miniature scale injects some color, lightness, and humor into an otherwise rusty, massive, and metallic world.
Industrial Visual Notation is an ongoing art activity, which occasionally gets collected into gallery shows.
