[ Drawing of Hazelwood, fenced in ]

We are trapped.

Hazelwood, my neighborhood, has about 4000 residents, and we are cut off from the rest of the city. There are only four roads which lead in and out of the neighborhood, and none of them are safe, level, or ADA compliant. Of particular concern is State Rt 885, which is called, at various points, Second Avenue or Irvine St, the road out to the north.

[map of Hazelwood]

Hazelwood is at the city border, the last city neighborhood in the Monongahela Valley, before Homestead, Swissvale, Edgewood, Braddock, and beyond. We are arrayed across a wide floodplane and hillslope, on the northern side of the river as it curves past Hay’s Woods and towards Oakland and the South Side.

[wide drawing of mon valley towns/hills in linear “riverboat operator” perspective]

At Greenfield Avenue, the far northern end of the neighborhood, the valley narrows considerably, the hillslopes get steeper, and the various rights of way get squeezed together. This geographical constraint has hemmed Hazelwood in - the little space that there is has been entirely allocated to cars, trains, and the (still private & closed to the Public) Hazelwood Green development. There is no safe, level pedestrian path out.

There are a number of solutions at hand. Let’s dive into them below!

Who is responsible for this mess?

Hazelwood Green

A conglomerations of philanthropic foundations and private developers, spearheaded by the ReMake group.

CSX Railroad

A privately held, hundred year old business which has operated in the neighborhood since the mill days, and whose rights of way have chopped up & isolated Hazelwood long after there stopped being passenger rail service on those tracks.

PennDOT

The state owns and maintains 885/Second/Irvine, but has not responded to community input in more than a decade.

City of Pittsburgh

Among various landowners whose sidewalks on Irvine are in terrible condition, the City-owned parcels are the worst. There is no concrete, no lighting, no curb, just gravel and tree-roots for 500 feet.
